GOOD AFTERNOON,

This past July, Steven Dettelbach was sworn in as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He became only the second Senate-confirmed ATF director since 2006, when Senate confirmation first became a requirement. Nominations for the position have proven difficult to gain Senate approval, leaving the ATF without a permanent director for seven years.

Dettelbach’s confirmation gives the ATF an opportunity to prioritize its work to reduce gun trafficking and the proliferation of ghost guns. It also places him in a unique position to help implement the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and to enforce other critical measures to prevent gun violence.
