GOOD AFTERNOON,

This month CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics released the final mortality data for 2023. All gun death data, based on death certificates for U.S. residents, is available through CDC’s Underlying Cause of Death database, part of the Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) online database; researchers, advocates, practitioners, and other members involved in the GVP community can use this database as a resource to highlight the ongoing gun violence epidemic across the country, identify the latest gun death trends, and utilize the data to recommend evidence-based solutions.

Last fall Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions analyzed the provisional 2023 data and provided five takeaways, including the continued rise of gun suicides and the impact of gun violence on vulnerable demographic groups. More information can be found here.

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT

This month we are featuring a report from the Black and Brown Collective for Community Solutions to Gun Violence titled The Case for More Equitable and Community-Engaged Research to Address Firearm-Related Violence in Black and Brown Communities. The report highlights the lack of gun violence research funding and the need to better understand academic and policy discourse around community violence.

Among their main recommendations they highlight the importance of investing in Black and Brown-led research centers, advocating for intentional, equity-focused funding for Black and Brown scholars, funding comprehensive research that explore a broad range of outcomes associated with violence intervention and prevention, collaborating with schools and universities to increase student awareness of research opportunities, establishing formal partnerships with community-based violence prevention practitioners,  and working with advocacy groups to translate research findings into evidence-informed solutions.
